It is very hard, but it is possible as long as youa re dedicated and are willing to do the hard work.
Make sure you learn from previous dentists and If you are in The UK learn from Dr Alka.

Good luck and do not give up. You will get there if you are willing to sacrifice and put your all into it

I wouldn't say it is Competitive, but I would say it is very very hard. I also want to be a dentist too. So just hard.

i'm going to study to be a dentist, and my mom is studying to be a dental hygenist and she's learning basically the same thing that first year dentists are learning, and it's really discouraging for me-you have to learn to identify every tooth just by looking at a model of it and tell what number it is, if its upper/lower and left or right, learn all of the different muscles and nerves in the mouth, seizures, emergencies, etc.
It is very competitive in all of the good dentist schools, like john hopkins (in Maryland) which takes students with all A's only. Many asian foreign students go there to earn their degrees because you have to be the best of the best.

Ahhh, to begin with there really isn't an "Orthodontic residency program" if your thinking in terms of how MD grads go through a residency program...Once you successfully graduate from dental school you may then take a State Board exam and immediately begin to practice, or you can get into a hospital dental residency program to get your DDS (Doctor of Dental Surgery)...If you do that, which you should, and you complete that residency, you can then apply to take a "Post Graduate Orthodontic Course"...which will allow you to be a practicing Orthodontist after you successfully complete the course.....As for how difficult the course is...If you can complete Dental School, you can get your Orthodontic certification...Good luck and I wish you well.

I'd say it's pretty tough, but then anything worth doing takes effort :). As long as you have the motivation and drive, you should be able to get through dental school. It's quite competetive to get in in the first place, but if you have a good application, show that you're interested, and have some experience through nursing or even work shadowing another dentist, you can get to the interview - and if you have a few interviews, you're bound to get in somewhere!
Once you're in dental school it's a hard slog but can be really enjoyable too, especially the practical work. You get experience of loads of different fields - you might decide orthodontics isn't for you. But if you're still intent on it, then yes it can be very competitive - but again, as long as you have the determination I'm sure you can succeed.
All the best!

It's very tough. You have to work very hard in college, not just getting good grades, but you also need to have other things such as community service and leadership activities that will help you get into dental school. Getting into dental school in the US is competitive. On average, there are 7 qualified people applying for every seat that is available.
Once you get into dental school, the course load is very demanding and you are learning lots and lots of new skills that you will soon use on actual people. If you have aspirations of becoming an orthodontist, you must do very well in dental school, recognizing that just about everyone in dental school is very smart and talented. Orthodontic residency programs in the US are very competitive. About 1000 people apply for about 300 seats every year, and the people applying are not all recent graduates from dental school. Some are practicing dentists, others are people from other countries.
It's not impossible, obviously, but you need to know it takes a lot of very hard work to become a dentist or an orthodontist. It's competitive because it's a great career, but best of luck to you!
