I have had braces for 2 years now. Just went to the orthodontics again and he put these rubber bands on my braces. They are attached from the front to the bottom of my canines. It hurts a lot and it’s not practical because I can’t move my mouth properly and it looks really weird. I have to wear it for 6 or 7 weeks and I start uni before this.
What are they and why do I need them?

  1. These are called elastics (or as they slang them at the office “triangles”) It helps your jaw move the right way so your teeth are straighter. It speeds up the process a bundle. They are practical totally practical. Don’t make the mistake of just not wearing them. That would be very bad, you’d have to have braces a long time.

  2. They use the bands so they can correct the bite of your mouth because as you know braces are only there to correct the position of the teeth, so when you change the positioning of the teeth you need to correct the bite which is what the bands do

  3. I had these when I was younger too, in exactly the same place. I think it’ to pull your back teeth forward to close a gap in your teeth. Mine snapped out and flew in somebody’s face one time so be careful! It will be worth it in the end though when you have beautiful straight teeth. Good luck.

  4. i have them, from front canines to back molars… i think they’re for pulling your front teeth back a bit to make sure they don’t stick out- at least that’s what mine are for.

  5. you have an overbite. so what they are doing is pulling your jaw back to you wont have an overbite anymore. so your top 2 teeth sit directly infront of your bottom 2 teeth.

  6. FYI,
these are important in order to accomplish what the doctor wants.
Not wearing them will take much longer or not at all,
    So are they important?
    DEFINITELY!

  7. The smart thing would have been to ask the dentist.

  8. NO NO NO!
it is to make the process faster.
