I’m such a space shot. I got my braces off November 2007, and wore a retainer every night. I lost my retainer this summer and had to buy a $250 new one. Now I lost the new one!
I can’t afford to buy another and my mom won’t pay either. I’m just curious if anyone had issues only wearing a retainer for a year or if it turned out okay…

On the average, one must wear the upper retainer for 2 years … and after that, depend on the amount of “relapse” .. one may or may not need it.
On the other hand, one needs to have the lower retainer for life, because the lower teeth normally will have a significant relapse without the retainer.

You really need to wear it for ever. Maybe not every night it depends everyone is different. I have had my braces off for 20 years and still continue to wear the same one every night. Every once in a while I will skip a night and I can see a difference. Maybe you should contact your orthodontist and possibly work out a payment plan. It was such an investment to get the braces and you would hate to have it ruined. I had a cousin who had braces the same time I did and her teeth look as though she never had them. They really were beautiful

after you first get your braces off, you should wear your retainer 24/7 but after that year you can wear it at night for the rest of your life. you can go 1-2 months without having your teeth move dramatically after that you may need braces again
You should wear a retainer until your in your 30′s. your teeth will shift. Not a lot, but they will. Save your money to get a new one. Just wear it at night that way you wont keep loosing it.
