I know that after braces, you wear retainers, but isn’t that just for holding the position of your teeth? If so, how does your jaw/bite stay in place after taking off the elastics then?

I don’t know if you’ve ever had braces or not, but if you have then you’ll know what I’m talking about.
If you haven’t noticed, once you get your wires changed, your teeth really only move within the first week or so and still you have about three or four weeks until you go back for your next appointment. The point of those extra weeks is to give time for your bone to grow around your newly aligned/positioned teeth.
So, once you wear you elastics or whatever to reposition your jaw line, they give about three or four weeks for your bone to grow into that position, almost perfectly.
Of course, if you were to take your braces off and not wear your retainer, they would eventually slip back into place.
And yes, your teeth make up your jawline as well, so if you hold the teeth in place (with your retainer) your jaw cannot move back.
