Hi, I’m 14 and got braces yesterday. I thought they were putting bottom and top brackets on (that’s what my parents told me), But Instead I got 8 spacers, 10 brackets on top, and the top wire. I really need help. I’m so sore, and in so much pain. My back bracket on the right side is lose and is poking me a lot ( l put wax on it). If a barely touch my teeth it fells like someone is hammering them. Same thing on the bottom cause of my spacers. I’m having braces for 2 years, and if they stay this way I can’t handle it! I have a high pain tolerance except for my teeth. I get my bottom braces on thursday and then have appointments every six weeks ( there self ligating InOvation braces ). After every appointment I figure skate for six hours, then pain was so bad it screwed with my jumps and spins! Tell it gets better!!! I take IB profen but it doesn’t numb it! I’m 5’4 1/2” and 86 pounds ( i’m under weight but not from a disorder, i have a very high metabolism ) so I can’t lose any weight, all i’ve eaten today is a small ice cream bar! Even soft food hurts, I tried to eat powdered donuts last night and I almost cried! So I put them in small peaces and dropped them in the back of my mouth and just swallowed, even that still hurt. THe dentist didn’t put the wire in so I don’t think they were tightened, why are they killing me! Please give me advice!!! Any special medications?
P.S. I got clear on top and am getting metal on bottom, does metal hurt worse!?!?!? And I’m sorry it’s so long!

  1. You are not being a baby. It hurts to move your teeth. You really should tell your parents.Maybe they can call the orthodontist and ask what else you can take for the discomfort. The discomfort will get better, but will come and go as they tighten wires and make adjustments.
Don’t try to tough this out on your own. Tell your parents. Good luck.

  2. Hello Lady….The simple fact is, your experiencing the normal twangs and pangs that every person goes through when they begin realignment procedures by way of spacers and brackets… Be assured that you will survive and you will be glad you went through the process when the treatment is completed….Good luck and I wish you well.

  3. Wow you sure are going through a lot. I know pain and it isn’t nice. Does your mom know about how you are suffering? Tell her immediately and you might try some Orajel. You can get it at the drugstore.
    Good luck!

  4. It may not seem like it now, but it WILL get better!! Your teeth are sore because they are being pushed apart and moved by pressure a little at a time – they will get used to the pressure within a couple of days and they won’t be as sore. Be sure and use the wax the ortho gave you for the inside by your cheeks – that helps A LOT! My daughter ate lots of KFC mashed potatoes & gravy, yogurt, smoothies, chicken & stars soup, anything that she dind’t have to really chew for the first few days. Just think of the pretty teeth you’ll have when they come off and you’ll definitely think it was all worth it!

  5. i am experiancing the exact same thing. the best you can do is sleep a lot!! while your asleep you won’t really feel the pain. you can also try humming. and drinking cold water. this helps because the wires are hard in mouth temp but in cold water temp it softens.
