Braces And Retainer Q??

Im getting my braces off in a few months and my orthodontist said something about the plastic retainer, so I was wondering: after you get your braces off do you get the hawley (plastic) or essix (wire)? is it possible to only get the hawley or do you have to get the essix eventually?
What did you have (recently pls.)?
ps. I have the “self ligating ‘damon’ braces, the box ones that dont need the rubber bands to hold the wire in place
thanks!

  1. first of all, your retainers are mixed up. an essix is clear plastic, like invisalign. a hawley is plastic, with a metal wire that wraps around your teeth. you can get either one, so i’ve heard. when i get my retainer, i think i want a hawley, because they’re sturdier, and last longer. an essix is great for people who worry about their teeth a lot. it all depends, but ask your orthodontist about this. i would get a hawley. at least they are sturdier.

  2. i had to wear a retainer that came in and out and i also had a retainer that was glued to the inside of my bottom front teeth. although i don’t know what kind the glued retainer was. hope this helps, but all in all the orthodontist will let you know the best possible treatment for you.

  3. Well i had braces and i wear my retainer everynight too. the thing that i learned from braces is taht sometimes it hurts byut when you get it off, you sort of feel relieved. The retainers don’t hurt for me, i just got the regular, ordinary plastic ones.

  4. I have the same braces you do, but anyway it depends on what your mouth needs you may get one or the other but i think you’ll get the wire first.

  5. when you get your braces off, they will give you a retainer that you’ll have to wear every single night! (don’t skip one or it will be tight the next night. seriously!!!)
