I’m just wondering what I should prepare myself for…I’m getting braces tomorrow for the first time. I’ve been told it hurts when they tighten the braces. True or false? And why?

  1. Haha I wondered the SAMEE thing! I got mine on about a year ago and remember it awesomly well :) .
First they clean your teeth, then they put this nasty tasting glue on your teeth, then they stick the brackets on and they put alot of pressure on so it hurts but like BARELYY. then they put this weird purple light onn it and then they do other stuff, none of that hurts. Then they put the wires in the brackets and put on your colored bands, which kinda of hurts, feels weird the first time you get it done, soon after all of this, probaby depending on how bad your teeth are .5-2 hours they will start to be sore, so the BEST thing to do is RIGHT after you get your braces on take some ibeprofen. it will be sore and it will feel WEIRD but as long as you take some ibeprofen the first couple days it will just be sore && kinda achee!

  2. You need to prepare yourself for a constant dull pain that lasts about a week when you first get them on. Eating is going be difficult as well, but you will get used to them. After this first week, whenever you go to get them tightened, the pain will return for a couple of days but it won’t be so bad.
Sorry to say all this to you, but I didn’t want to lie and say it’ll be no different…

  3. It does hurt, but its more a soreness than pain. Since you are getting them on for the first time, I would take a pain pill like half an hour in advance, and then you won’t be as sore after. Your teeth shift every time they tighten the braces but it only lasts a few days. And when they start to cut up your lips, use the wax they give you, sometimes it can REALLY help! good luck, i know braces suck a lot, but the smile you’ll have will be amazing! (and don’t listen to them when they say what you can/can’t eat. I eat corn on the cob and popcorn and candy a lot and nothing happens if your careful and you brush well! the only bad thing is apples, i broke my braces with an apple!) i have an app. monday and i hope mine are coming off soon! :)

  4. it hurts a bit for a couple of days after tightening each time as the wire is pulling your teeth around. Just make sure you have plenty of soups in your house as its going to hurt to eat.
I had problems biting into a sandwich -lost a bit of weight back then as i just couldnt be bothered eating :|
Keep a few paracetamol/ibuprofen handy aswell.

  5. Well, it doesn’t hurt when you’re at the orthodontist, but naturally, it hurts when your teeth shift! It usually only lasts a few days, and you really get used to it after a while… other than that, I brush my teeth three or four times a day, and eat whatever I like. Appointment tomorrow, gonna ask when they’re coming off!

  6. the worst part of braces is….
1). Getting used to them, For a few days it will feel soooo awkward and uncomfortable i your mouth
2). Eating the first few days after you get them. It hurts to eat hard food so your stuck with soft food :[ not much variety.
but mine didnt hurt other than eating. you’ll be okay

  7. It hurts for a couple of days after they tighten the wires for your braces, but your mouth is just sore. When they are tightening the wires the orthodontist is just using thicker wires to bring your teeth together. Your mouth will be fine after two or three days.

  8. It doesn’t hurt when you first get them, but it’s pretty sore the first few weeks you have them and when you get them tightened. When this happens, stick to soft foods and take over the counter medications such as Advil or Tylenol. I know braces are no fun, but they’re worth it.

  9. ughh pple say it hurts and all that crap
    actually their just sore
i had to eat kfc for 10 days
which were mashed potatoes and macaroni and cheese
but the worst part is the first 10 days
and the first 10 days after you get them tightened

  10. i think the worst part is getting them off, because of all the cracking noises it sounds like cracking teeth! other than that it’s just moderate pain that you can take ibuprofen for, and it’s worth it once you have pretty straight teeth!

  11. Its different for everyone. I myself found getting used to them at first difficult, especially the restrictions as to what you can eat! Yes, they can be painful when tightened… but thats easily cured but nurofen!

  12. Ha! Im nervous too. Im getting braces in a week and currently have Spacers. If there is is pain it’s because it’s all part of the process.

  13. i think the worst part is when the braces cut your lips. its only in the first few months tho! tightening hurts for a little while but youll get over it.

  14. when you first get them on it hurts like hell..
but its okay after a week or so..
then when you get the tightened it hurts

  15. Eatting food. Just think your teeth will look lovely once the process has ended.

  16. dont worry, only the first 5-7 days will be sorta painful when you need to eat. but after that, its nothing
